Neighbourhood Small Grants—Special Spring Clean-up Funding

This special NSG funding initiative is now CLOSED.

The surprise snowstorm that hit Bowen Island in early March resulted in extensive damage. The heavy snowfall that brought down many trees and branches left quite a mess in its wake. Do you and your neighbours have some debris on your properties from this extraordinary weather event? Take advantage of this special, one-time funding initiative through the Neighbourhood Small Grants program (NSG) to help clean up storm debris while promoting community spirit and collaboration among neighbours. Apply for a grant of $500 to pay for wood chipping services for storm debris on private properties.

What you need to know:

  • $500 grants available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A maximum of 2 grants per NERP Zone (scroll down for more detailed information on zone delineations).
  • 2 people per neighbourhood required to act as main points of contact and to organize the chipper and clean-up.
  • Applicants are responsible for managing the logistics of booking and paying for wood chipping services and organizing the gathering of branches and debris in their neighbourhoods (make sure that you only gather suitable materials and follow the directions of the professional you have hired!).
  • These funds are to be used for the tree branch debris on private properties ONLY. The Bowen Island Municipality is responsible for clean up on roadways and public land.
  • Regular NSG rules apply – we cannot support projects retroactively and only individuals/small neighbourhood groups can apply. One applicant will be required to sign a grant acceptance form and provide a small write up and photos of the project. Please learn more about the NSG guidelines here.

Community building

  • Make sure to spread the word and let your neighbours know about how they can participate.
  • Have neighbours that are unable to do their own clean-up? Bring your community together by assisting those in need and reaching out to see if anyone requires help around their property. Get everyone involved!
  • Community gatherings are strongly recommended! Celebrate your efforts by getting together to share refreshments and food. Any additional grant funds may be used for snacks and beverages.
  • Can’t use the wood chips for mulching in your neighbourhood? Let us know and we can put you in touch with a community group that would gladly take the chips!

Applications due by APRIL 15. Email your application to: [email protected]
