A Year in Review

From the Annual General Meeting, April 21, 2016

2015 was a remarkably successful year. The Foundation continued in its efforts to match donors with community needs, taking a number of significant steps towards our ultimate goal of building a more caring community.

The year brought considerable growth in our financial assets and, as a result, in our capacity to grant. The current total of funds under administration has now reached $1.2 million and our capacity to provide grants to Bowen Island’s many non-profit organizations now sits at about $50,000 per year. We continue to rely upon the resources and expertise of the Vancouver Foundation to assist in the management and investment of our Funds. Their access to sophisticated tax and giving strategies, and their world class financial managers, continue to provide us with very sound returns on our investments.

We are pleased to report that total donations to the Community Foundation were 50 per cent greater in 2015 than in 2014. We are most appreciative of this support from the community and we acknowledge our responsibility in managing these proceeds. As Bowen Islanders we should be very proud that we care so compassionately about our neighbours and community. We are developing long term endowment funding that keeps giving back to Bowen. Accordingly, our annual fundraiser is now appropriately referred to as “For Bowen, For Ever”.

This year, we implemented a Strategic Plan that identified three main pillars, the Foundation’s role as leader in community philanthropy, in donor relations, and in building a stronger Foundation. We have followed through on this plan in a variety of ways, some of which are listed in the Top 10 article below.

Our focus this year has also included: 

  • Developing a transparent, accountable and streamlined granting process
  • Creating a refreshed and readable website that is easy to navigate
  • Providing regular newsletters to our subscribers and donors
  • Reviewing and refreshing all of our governance policies
  • Continuing with the stewardship of our existing funds and creating a new endowed fund, the Marg Witty Island Pacific School Bursary Fund
  • Funding and helping to manage the work of the Helping Hand Fund – which distributes funding, on a confidential basis, to our neighbours in need
  • Assisting all grant applicants with the application process

All of our work is administered through a volunteer Board of Directors who care passionately about our community. On behalf of the Board, I wish to express appreciation to the Foundation’s donors for your confidence and support.

This year, we invited a group of Ambassadors to represent our values and help communicate our message. We want to express our appreciation to these community partners, listed in the Top 10 article below.

In addition, the Board is delighted with the work of our Helping Hand Committee, Shelagh McKinnon, Bob Andrew, Amanda Ockeloen, Gary Ander and Spencer Grundy. Kudos also to our Youth Committee volunteers, John Stiver and Sarah Haxby. Many Island organizations have also helped with fundraisers on our behalf and we wish to acknowledge Paul Rickett at the Bowen Island Beer and Wine Store, Mary Letson of Positively Fit and Barry Thomas of MacDonald Realty.

The Board continues to evolve with the appointments of Henry Campbell, Michael Cornelissen and David Podmore as Directors (full biographies are included below). 

Kathy Bellringer, Colleen O’Neil, Andrea Verwey and Kristen Watson, and all retired after serving extensive terms, and making significant contributions to the work of the Foundation.

The Artist in Residence program has seen the involvement this year of artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and his majestic sculpture ‘SEI’ (see article below). The Board also wants to express its appreciation for the past use of Andrew Plewes’ iconic image of Bowen Island ‘View of Bowen from Black Mountain’. Our intent is to continue to highlight the work of a Bowen artist on a revolving basis.

Finally, in 2016, the Board has identified academic scholarships and an intent to endow the Helping Hand Fund as priorities for this year. With the support of the community, we are confident that we can make both a reality.

In closing, I want to say that is a privilege to serve as Chair of the Foundation. With your help, we hope to continue to make Bowen Island a more caring and compassionate community.

Bowen’s New Push Mountain Trike has Arrived!

Many of you will remember Sally Fitz-Gibbon’s great idea, and her successful application to the Bowen Island Community Foundation for a grant enabling the Bowen Island Library Foundation to buy a Push Mountain Trike.

Just this past week, the eagerly-anticipated mountain trike arrived on the Island! The trike will enable people with mobility issues to experience our beautiful trails. It will be available to Bowen Island residents to borrow from the Library for the day in the same way they borrow items for the Med Shed (however, in this case, with a credit card deposit).  The Library will also assume responsibility for maintaining and storing the bike, and will insure it as part of their insurance policy through the Municipality.

Garden Gateway, Ground Breaking and Progress Update

The vision of the volunteer-driven Bowen Island Garden Gateway Initiative is to create a more welcoming experience at the ferry by creating a visually pleasing arrival to Bowen Island. This will be accomplished through the installation of a naturally appropriate raised garden rockery with seating in the area between the BC Ferries washrooms and the Cenotaph on the south side of Government Road in Snug Cove. The project was announced more than a year ago, and we are all eagerly anticipating the beautiful transformation in the Cove that the Garden Gateway will create.

The volunteer committee spearheading the initiative has learned that patience is definitely a virtue! Most Bowen Islanders have seen the recently cut asphalt in the Cove near the Cenotaph and may be wondering what is next …

We have been coordinating the timing of our project to coincide with the different stages in the heron nesting season, the adjacent construction on USSC property, and permissions and requirements from the Municipality. Oh, and let’s not forget the schedules of our expert volunteer labour!
Phase 2 will see the installation of the raised stone landscaped beds with seating, soil, drip emitter system, and plants.

So while there may not be much visible progress, rest assured that the wheels are still in motion behind the scenes. In the meantime, enjoy the longer sunny days and the promise of a new and beautiful place to sit and enjoy them while in the Cove.


“Artist in Residence” Program

The Community Foundation’s vision is to feature noted local artists on our greeting cards and in our communications, in celebration and support of the arts in our community. The Bowen Island Community Foundation was established to support the artistic, cultural, educational, recreational and social well-being of residents on Bowen Island. The Artist is Residence program helps further our mandate and is an expression of our belief in the value of public art and the importance of facilitating dialogue in support of the arts.

Last year, we welcomed our first artist under this initiative, Andrew Plewes, featuring his beautiful painting ‘View of Bowen from Black Mountain.’

SEI

This year, we are proud to have the opportunity to showcase Bowen Island resident and artist
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (MNY), with his work SEI. The sculpture, part of the YVR Art Collection, was designed by MNY for Y Public Art, and is permanently located at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Mall.

SEI is a remarkable sculpture that pushes the boundaries of design innovation. Made of highly-polished stainless steel and weighing 3,800 kg., SEI is a sculptural example of the hybrid art form Y Public Art is known for, Haida Manga. While the overall physical structure is reminiscent of North Pacific Indigenous Arts – in particular Haida Nation – the sculpture is pierced with modernist and contemporary influences.

The material of this 12-meter-long public artwork was carefully selected for its narrative implications. The reflective surface is an invitation to a dynamic visual experience with no end. Connected to its surroundings, the sky, buildings and crowds of people become a part of the piece, and allow the observer to see our common humanity and shared responsibility in the present. The highly-polished stainless steel blurs the edges between object and background, while the copper underbelly and the silver back of SEI raise notions of currency and value and speak to the surrounding commercial activity as the silver sky and earthly copper anchor the entire plaza.

Taking design and fabrication to a new level of flexibility and precision, SEI is a cutting-edge example of how to bring art to the public.

Bowen Island Gives Back

The support of Bowen Islanders has enabled the Community Foundation to award an extensive and wide ranging number of grants in the past year. We are delighted to have awarded eight grants since October, totalling more than $50,000:

Projects Supported by the Community Foundation’s Spring 2016 Grants

COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANTS

Snug Cove House Society:
Specialized Facilities Design – $2,500
This grant will support Snug Cove House, which aims to create supportive living for seniors on Miller Road. Grant monies will enable Snug Cove House Society to engage an expert, who specialized in the design of living spaces for aged care facilities, to produce drawings and sketches for the suites and amenities spaces, and purchasing lists and sourcing suggestions. The grant will help defray these costs, and allow the project to remain on its timeline.

Better Meals Program – $1,500 (from the Maggie Cumming Legacy Fund)
This grant will ensure high quality meals are delivered for free to people in need of meal support all around the Island.

Bowen Island Community School Association:
Community Playground Upgrades – $5,000
The Community School Association is in the process of raising $41,968 (including $10,000 in labour from the School District) to cover the costs and installation of three new pieces of equipment at the Bowen Island Community School playground. The pieces will replace two others that are at the end of their life, and will likely be removed this summer. The new pieces were selected by a community-wide vote of parents and kids, and will have a 25-year warranty. This playground is the only publicly-accessible playground on Bowen Island. The Committee hopes to finish fundraising and install the pieces in summer 2017. The Foundation’s contribution, plus the Knick Knack Nooks’ $1,380 contribution, will hopefully offer leverage for the remaining $18,000.

Bowen Island Museum and Archives:
Garden Revitalization – $7,500
This grant will help fund an innovative garden and green space revitalization project in conjunction with Telus. The Museum is undertaking an exciting project ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2017 that will see a new garden gathering place emerge at Four Corners. The project has been carefully put together in close collaboration with Telus, which owns the land next to the Museum, and which is prepared to tear down an unsightly fenced area near the corner to release a new green space and open up the corner at Trunk Road and Miller Road. The project will create an accessible path and gathering space for seniors living nearby, and for all Island residents.

Bowen Children’s Centre:
Infant Toddler Annex – $10,000
This grant to the Bowen Children’s Centre will help fund a new Infant and Toddler Annex to the existing building at 650 Carter Road, and will allow the Children’s Centre to offer licensed care for eight infants and toddlers. It’s a significant project that includes $30,000 in volunteer effort, and (hopefully) a significant grant from the Province. The grant from the Community Foundation will reduce the amount of the mortgage taken out on the existing building, and help keep fees low for all parents.

KNICK KNACK NOOK GRANTS

The Bowen Island Community Foundation Grants Committee worked with members of the Knick Knack Nook (KKN) Grants Committee, Dorothy Geisler and Betty Dhont, with the assistance of KKN President Donna Scorer, to evaluate applications and determine the grants to be awarded. The Knick Knack Nook grants fall under two broad categories: social sustainability and environmental sustainability.

Social sustainability grants
Community Learning (Bowen Island Community School), in partnership with Bowen Children’s Centre:
Goose on the Loose Program for Fall 2016 – Winter 2017 – $500
This will provide programming for young families of kids 0-2 at Family Place, and supports family health and literacy skills.

Caring Circle Health & Wellness Society of Bowen Island:
Befriending Program – Volunteer Visitors –  $1,000 
This will support a new program that will see volunteers visit with those in our community who want more social contact and connection. This will benefit seniors, but may also be helpful for a young parent or someone temporarily immobilized. The grant will provide funds for promotional and training materials.

Bowen Island Community School Association:
BICS Community Playground Upgrade – Spring 2017 – $1,380
These funds will support the community initiative to upgrade the playground equipment at BICS.

Bowen Children’s Centre:
No Child Left Behind and Preschool Summer Camp Bursary – $1,620
This grant will support programs to make summer day camps more accessible.
Under the ‘No Child Left Behind’ program, five children will be supported for the summer of 2016. Specifically the funds will allows Bowen Children’s Centre to hire support workers for children with extra needs.
The funds for the bursary will enable 2 preschool aged kids to attend a week-long half day camp this summer. This is the first bursary of this kind on Bowen Island.

SKY (Seniors Keeping Young):
Bi-monthly Community Lunch Program – $3,000
These funds will enable SKY to hire a professional chef to prepare soups for the bi-monthly community lunch program. This grant represents true community collaboration with five organizations working in partnership: SKY, the Legion, Snug Cove House Caring Circle, and the Little Red Church. About 45 people access each community lunch and that number is growing. The program is in its first year, and the growth has been significant as word gets out.

Environmental sustainability grants
Bowen Heritage:
Demonstration Garden Improvements – $500
This grant will enable Bowen Heritage to pursue their plans for the summer, which include:

  • Restoring their mason bee population
  • Expanding the composter demonstration capacity
  • Replenishing soil in the Community Demonstration Garden

Clean Energy Canada:
Solar Panel Installation at Bowen Island Community School – $6,500
This grant contributes to the fundraising efforts for the project by Clean Energy Canada (CEC), in partnership with BICS and the West Vancouver School District, getting it closer to the finish line. With the $12,500 previously awarded by the Community Foundation in Fall of 2015, the project is now only $6,000 from completion. The solar panels will be gifted to BICs, and the project will include blending the learning from the solar panels into curriculum in myriad ways, with Clean Energy Canada’s support. The total cost of the project is $50,000, with  $25,000 being offered by a private donor to CEC’s Solar Now! Project, provided that Bowen Island can match that amount. Once all of the project funds are in place, the solar panels will be installed.

A Top 10 List for the Spring of 2016

With donations received from the community… what have we done lately? Here are 10 highlights that might interest, surprise or please you.

  1. We’ve helped to fund the Garden Gateway initiative, a project that will take shape in the coming months, beautifying the entrance to our island with a dazzling array of sustainable plantings, and a raised garden rockery with seating.
  2. We provided some initial start-up funding to the Knick Knack Nook and have recently been working with the Knick Knack Re-Use It Store Society to help them with their Small Grants Program, which in 2016 will distribute $15,000 in grants to Bowen Islanders, focused on environmental and social sustainability.
  3. We recently hosted a workshop on Bowen to assist all of the Island’s non-profit organizations with the important task of statutory compliance (not the most exciting of initiatives, perhaps, but a critical part of what we all do).
  4. We’ve funded the purchase of a push-trike that will be stored next to the Library, and will make the trails of Crippen Park and elsewhere accessible for all, enabling an important connection to the nature that we have at our doorstep.
  5. We continue to act as stewards for Bowen Islanders who have provided us with generous grants of land – grants that will, in time, significantly increase both our total asset base and our ability to provide funding to a number of worthy community projects.
  6. In early March of this year, we hosted the Governor General of Canada at the Kay Meek Centre in West Vancouver, along with the other Sea to Sky Community Foundations: West Vancouver, North Shore, Whistler, Sunshine Coast and Squamish.
  7. We’ve started a Youth Council, through the generous grant of a donor, empowering Bowen youth decision-making, and providing simultaneous learning of the values of stewardship, community service, and philanthropy.
  8. We are an entirely volunteer board, holding monthly meetings, and representing a wide range of Bowen Islanders: men and women, young and old, working and retired, relatively recent arrivals and remarkably long-term residents.
  9. We provide a range of bursaries and scholarship to Bowen Islanders every year: the Aaron Sluggett Memorial Scholarship, the Bowen Island Golf Association Junior Scholarship, the Knick Knack Nook Bursaries for Environmental Sustainability, the Maggie Cumming Legacy Fund Scholarship, and the recently announced Margaret Witty Bursary Fund.
  10.  We have 13 ambassadors, a mix of outstanding Bowen Islanders who help us in building awareness and understanding of the work of the Foundation, encouraging support from within our community: Shelagh MacKinnon, Noah Pryce-Jones, Louise McIntosh, Brian Biddlecombe, Darryl Deegan, Mary Letson, Katherine Gish, Paulo Arreaga, Ted Spear, Kevin Manning, Donna Scorer, Erwen Smith – and still very much with us in spirit – the late Piers Hayes.

As Bowen Islanders entered the doors of Cates Chapel for the Annual General Meeting of the Community Foundation, they were offered a glass of wine and a selection of cheese and other appetizers.

The chapel was close to full during the evening of April 21st: it was a celebration of the past year’s accomplishments, highlighted by the Chair’s report, presentations to our 2016 grant recipients, and the announcement of some changes to the Board – welcoming incoming board members Henry Campbell, David Podmore, and Michael Cornelissen, and presentations to outgoing members Kathy Bellringer, Colleen O’Neil, Kristen Watson and Andrea Verwey.

The accompanying photos tell the story of a wonderful evening, with tasty wines from Paul Rickett of the Bowen Beer and Wine Cellar, a fine selection of appetizers, and most important of all, convivial conversations about the importance of living in a caring community.

Community Foundation Board Evolution: Farewell and Welcome

The Board wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the Directors who recently retired at the expiration of their terms. Colleen O’Neil, Kristen Watson, Kathy Bellringer and Andrea Verwey served the Foundation with skill and compassion for many years. Thank you!

Three new Directors were appointed at the AGM. We wish to welcome Henry Campbell, Michael Cornelissen (Treasurer) and David Podmore.

Henry Campbell, Director

An Albertan by birth but a West Coaster by heart, Henry has been visiting Bowen since the early 1990s and was thrilled to move to the island with his wife, Eleanor, in 2015. A practicing lawyer since 2009, Henry works remotely for an Edmonton-based law firm. He is a board member of Vancouver’s Jump Current Performance Society and a judge for the Brenda Strathern “Late Bloomers’” Writing Prize. In his spare time he derives great joy from creative writing and riding his motorcycle (though not at the same time).

Michael Cornelissen, Treasurer

Michael, who joined the Board in 2016, was born and raised in South Africa, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and later graduated with his MBA from the University of Cape Town. He emigrated to Canada in 1967. There followed a 40-plus year career in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto, first as CFO of a major commercial real estate company, then as CEO in the banking sector, working for what is now the Brookfield Asset Management Group. He moved to Vancouver in 1992 and settled on Bowen with his wife Gayle in 2009. His community involvement includes Chair of the Metro Toronto United Way Campaign, the Toronto Chamber Players, and Canada’s Challenge for the America’s Cup. On Bowen, Michael was Chair of the first Municipal Finance Committee, has acted as Financial Agent for several Council candidates, serves as a volunteer for CAWES and was spokesman for local improvement initiatives. Michael has four children and four grandchildren. Previously an avid competitive sailor, he’s now fixated on golf and is a keen supporter of the Bowen Island Golf Club.

David R. Podmore, Director

Widely recognized as one of Vancouver’s most influential contributors to the real estate industry, David Podmore has been in the business for more than 40 years. David brought years of planning and development experience to the table when he co-founded Concert with Jack Poole in 1989. Today, David serves as Concert’s Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Concert Real Estate Corporation and Concert Infrastructure FT Inc. 

David is often recognized for his tireless efforts to give back to the community, both professionally and personally. David is Chair of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. David has served as Chair of the BC Pavilion Corporation, Chair of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Foundation, President of the Urban Development Institute (Pacific Region), President of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, member of the BC Progress Board and spent eight years as a director of the Canadian Tourism Commission.

David holds a Bachelor’s Degree specializing in community planning from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s Degree (Earth Sciences) specializing in urban planning from the University of Alberta. He is a Registered Professional Planner (MCIP), a Professional Member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia (RIBC) and the Real Estate Institute of Canada (FRI).

Sea to Sky Community Foundations Welcome the Governor General of Canada

It has been a few weeks now since the visit of Their Excellencies to the Sea to Sky region, and this event holds fond memories for each of us and for the many friends of our Foundation who were able to join the celebration on March 3rd.

Clearly, the audience was charmed and delighted by the warm and thoughtful manner of our Governor General – he is the quintessential storyteller.

“This event is a wonderful example of what becomes possible through partnership,” said His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, patron of the close to 200 community foundations across Canada. “Your region is culturally diverse and its rapidly changing demographics represent both a challenge and an opportunity. In short, while the Sea to Sky region is one of the most beautiful and prosperous regions in Canada, we can’t afford to be complacent. That’s why you are here today – because you know there is always more to do and that we must do more.”

Sea to Sky community foundations, which include Squamish, Whistler, Sunshine Coast, North Shore, West Vancouver and Bowen Island, hosted the event. The Bowen Island Community Foundation provided a number of complimentary tickets to enable guests to attend the event, including close to 30 students and teachers from Bowen.

This was a wonderful example of the close cooperation that exists between the six Foundations in the Sea to Sky region and the entire event was extremely well organized by the West Vancouver Community Foundation.

Directors Colleen O’Neil, Joanne Gassman, Julia McCaig and Jennifer Pardee attended on behalf of the Bowen Island Community Foundation and were all impressed by His Excellency’s talk, in particular his comment about hope really resonated for us: “oxygen for the human spirit”. This along with comments related to the theme of giving certainly left us inspired.  He did a wonderful job of speaking to the Sea to Sky Community Foundations and highlighting our work – including a reference to our own Bowen Youth Council.

It certainly made us feel proud and honoured to be serving on the Board of the Bowen Island Community Foundation.

Your Community Foundation Shows National Leadership

Vital Conversations, which started on Bowen Island as a local adaptation of the national program ‘Vital Signs’, has now been accredited for use by other community foundations across the country. Our initiative went national!

Legacy Gift Opportunity

The Bowen Island Community Foundation (BICF) has negotiated a special granting opportunity with the Vancouver Foundation. If the BICF can raise $100,000 in cumulative legacy gifts in 2016 (donors need simply advise and confirm they are including the Bowen Community Foundation in their estate planning), the Vancouver Foundation will grant $10,000 to the BICF. In this way, a legacy gift can pay immediate rewards to our community.

Your Board Stays Informed

Planned Giving Seminar
Board Directors recently attended a seminar to remain current on the latest tax efficient strategies for donor planned giving.

Community Foundations of BC Gathering
Board Directors also attended the Community Foundations of BC Gathering in April. Hosted by Vancouver Foundation, with support from Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives and Community Foundations of Canada, the 2016 Provincial Gathering was an opportunity for BC community foundations to meet and share stories and knowledge, and build capacity to ensure stronger communities for years to come.

Bowen in Action Youth Event

The Bowen Youth in Action (BYiA) group invited Bowen youth to join them at the Youth Centre on May 28, 2016 for a potluck event – organized by and for Bowen youth. It was an important opportunity to engage youth and to identify their needs and seek their input. The BYiA is currently developing a proposal to create a sports court/skateboard park at the Youth Centre. As part of this initiative, they invited all youth to come and share their thoughts and ideas about the proposal. The project will require fundraising and possible grants but it’s an exciting initiative that members of BYiA believe will provide a much needed space and opportunity for youth to be active and to have fun in a space designed by youth. In addition, the BYiA group is looking for ideas on how best to support youth on Bowen Island. The Bowen Island Community Foundation is supporting and sponsoring the BYiA group. Our youth have an important voice on Bowen Island and we encourage them to get involved with Bowen Youth in Action! Be prepared to submit your great ideas! Here’s a summary of the schedule for the next granting cycle:

Nov 2016 Foundation will announce the 2-stage process for grant applications
Jan 2017 Stage 1 – Foundation will issue a “Call for Good Ideas” (500-word submissions)
Feb/Mar 2017 Stage 2 – Foundation will interview shortlisted candidates
Apr 2017 Foundation will announce successful grant applications at the 2017 AGM
