The Bowen Island Community Foundation’s success relies on a hardworking, passionate, and stable Board of Directors who collectively offer a range of relevant skills and knowledge to the Foundation’s mission and strategy. Our approach to recruiting and electing new Board members from our local community is open and transparent.

Meet our Board of Directors

HammerbergSoren Hammerberg, Chair

Soren and his wife Elizabeth live full time on Bowen Island. Soren brings to the Community Foundation an extensive legal and philanthropic background. He founded Hammerberg Lawyers LLP, a prominent BC insurance litigation firm. He also served as a Governor of the Trial Lawyers Association, frequently lectured at Continuing Legal Education and UBC Law School, and serves as a mentor at Thompson Rivers University Law School. Soren’s law firm has worked closely with numerous charities, in particular Education Without Borders. Soren and Elizabeth have three sons and are enjoying a growing family of grandchildren.

Michael CornelissenMichael Cornelissen, Treasurer

Michael, who joined the Board in 2016, was born and raised in South Africa, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and later graduated with his MBA from the University of Cape Town. He emigrated to Canada in 1967. There followed a 40-plus year career in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto, first as CFO of a major commercial real estate company, then as CEO in the banking sector, working for what is now the Brookfield Asset Management Group. He moved to Vancouver in 1992 and settled on Bowen with his wife Gayle in 2009. His community involvement includes Chair of the Metro Toronto United Way Campaign, the Toronto Chamber Players, and Canada’s Challenge for the America’s Cup. On Bowen, Michael was Chair of the first Municipal Finance Committee, has acted as Financial Agent for several Council candidates, serves as a volunteer for CAWES and was spokesman for local improvement initiatives. Michael has four children and four grandchildren. Previously an avid competitive sailor, he’s now fixated on golf and is a keen supporter of the Bowen Island Golf Club.

Neil BoydNeil Boyd, Director

Neil Boyd has been a full-time resident of Bowen Island for 35 years, and was a member of Bowen’s council and its Metro Vancouver representative from 2002 to 2005. He is a Professor and the Director of the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University, educated in psychology at the University of Western Ontario and in law at Osgoode Hall Law School.

He is the author of seven books, many government reports and academic articles, and is a frequent media commentator on subjects related to law and criminology, most notably violence and drug policy. His most recent book, A Thousand Dreams: Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and the Fight for its Future, was co-authored with Senator Larry Campbell and Vancouver journalist Lori Culbert. The book was short-listed for Canada’s Donner Prize, and was the winner of the George Ryga Award for social awareness in literature.

Henry CampbellHenry Campbell, Director

An Albertan by birth but a West Coaster by heart, Henry has been visiting Bowen since the early 1990s and was thrilled to move to the island with his wife, Eleanor, in 2015. A practicing lawyer since 2009, Henry works remotely for an Edmonton-based law firm. He is a board member of Vancouver’s Jump Current Performance Society (http://jumpcurrent.com/) and a judge for the Brenda Strathern “Late Bloomers’” Writing Prize (http://www.thecalgaryfoundation.org/grants-awards/unique-awards). In his spare time he derives great joy from creative writing and riding his motorcycle (though not at the same time).

Joanne GassmanJoanne Gassman, Director

Joanne has recently retired after 39 years with Bank of Montreal where her last position was Senior Vice-President, Personal and Commercial Banking for British Columbia and Yukon. Joanne and her life partner, Bruce, have lived on Bowen since 1991 and are looking forward to living here full time as both are nature lovers and avid gardeners. In addition to extensive leadership experience in the financial services industry, Joanne has been involved in a number of advisory and charitable boards and currently serves as Board Chair for the Bill Reid Foundation, Chair of the IAP Council-Vancouver for CARE Canada and is a Director on the Streetohome board. Joanne holds an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Holly GraffHolly Graff, Director

Moving to Bowen from the US in 2003, Holly found something here that she didn’t know she was looking for – a caring and connected community. An added bonus was meeting her husband, artist David Graff.

Holly brings more than two decades’ worth of experience in strategic communications – from Washington, DC with a full range consulting services firm specializing in executive education for senior government officials from developing countries, to media management on a major motion picture documentary release.

She is currently a communications consultant for an independent boutique life insurance firm in Vancouver. Other recent endeavours include investor relations for a $10 million software start-up for global relief supply chain management.

Throughout this time, she has consistently written for thought leaders about emerging multifunctional business issues that shape the global environment. Numerous articles, books and op-ed pieces published in the Huffington Post, LA Times, CNN, Harvard Business Review and University Presses.

A Canadian resident, Holly was born in the United States, and grew up in South Africa.

Jennifer HallJennifer Hall, Vice Chair

Jennifer joined the Board in 2014. She moved to Bowen in 2004 in search of a connected community and access to nature after having lived in large cities in Asia. She loves living on Bowen and is an active volunteer. She is also an avid outdoor enthusiast and spends her free time exploring Bowen’s woods and waters – hiking with her dogs Sherpa and Guinness and kayaking with her husband Peter.

Jennifer brings to the Foundation extensive project management and communications expertise gained through both local and international experience. She has worked in Japan, for the Japanese Government, and in Thailand for the country’s leading advertising agency. In Canada, Jennifer has worked as a communications and strategic planning consultant for non-profit and government clients, and as the Professional Development Director for an education publisher. She currently works as a member of the development and communications team for a social service non-profit in Vancouver. She holds a BA from McGill and an MA in International Leadership from SFU.

Larry LunnLarry Lunn, Director

Larry is a graduate of the University of Alberta and a CFA charter holder. He currently along with his wife, Maureen, lives on Bowen Island, where they have owned property since 2000.

Larry founded Connor, Clark & Lunn Investment Management Ltd. in 1982. He is currently the Chairman of the Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group Ltd., Co-Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Vancouver Art Gallery as well as Chair of the Finance & Audit committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Larry is also a director of the Bowen Island Community Foundation and Ecotrust Canada.

Larry was formerly a Director of the Connor, Clark & Lunn Foundation, a Director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, a counselor for the University of British Columbia Portfolio Management Foundation, a counselor for Simon Fraser Global Asset & Wealth Management Business Council and a past member of Simon Fraser’s Beedie School of Business Dean’s External Advisory Board.

Jennifer PardeeJennifer Pardee, Director

Jennifer is pleased to begin her second term as a Director with the BICF having joined the Board in April 2015. Given her 34 year career as an educator (teacher and then administrator), her passion for working with youth has been a great way to give back to the community serving on the Bowen Island Community Foundation. As the former principal at BICS, she hopes to continue to provide the Board with a unique perspective based on her experiences working with families in the Bowen community. She has a B.Ed and MA degree from UBC. Jen and her husband Tim have been full time residents on Bowen since 2009. She has three grown children who love to come and visit. Her entire family enjoys an active lifestyle in the outdoors and she can often be found hiking, cycling and kayaking around beautiful Bowen Island or puttering in the garden. She is loving retired life on Bowen Island and is enjoying the opportunity to give back to the community through her volunteer work with the BICF.

David PodmoreDavid R. Podmore, O.B.C., Director

Widely recognized as one of Vancouver’s most influential contributors to the real estate industry, David Podmore has been in the business for more than 40 years. David brought years of planning and development experience to the table when he co-founded Concert with Jack Poole in 1989. Today, David serves as Concert’s Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Concert Real Estate Corporation and Concert Infrastructure FT Inc.

David is often recognized for his tireless efforts to give back to the community, both professionally and personally. David is immediate past Chair of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. David has served as Chair of the BC Pavilion Corporation, Chair of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Foundation, President of the Urban Development Institute (Pacific Region), President of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association, member of the BC Progress Board and spent eight years as a director of the Canadian Tourism Commission.

David holds a Bachelor’s Degree specializing in community planning from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s Degree (Earth Sciences) specializing in urban planning from the University of Alberta. He is a Registered Professional Planner (MCIP), a Professional Member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia (RIBC) and the Real Estate Institute of Canada (FRI).

Kim StephensKim Stephens, Director

Kim moved to Bowen from West Vancouver in 2011. His mission is to influence the “land ethic” in the local government setting so that communities “design with nature” and retain the majestic environment that makes BC a unique place. An integrator and facilitator, Kim plays a bridging role between the Province and local government. He is the Executive Director of the Partnership for Water Sustainability in BC, a not-for-profit society, and is responsible for delivering the Water Sustainability Action Plan through collaboration and partnerships. An engineer-planner with four decades experience, he has played a leadership role in a series of provincial initiatives that drive conservation, protection and restoration of water and land. Kim and Heather have four adult children and two grandchildren.


Administrator

juliaJulia McCaig

Julia joined the Board in 2013 and has lived on Bowen since 1997. She attended the Writing and Publishing Program at SFU specializing in technical writing and most recently graduated from BCIT’s Web Technologies Program. She operates Black Dog Creative, a communications company and teaches technology courses at North Shore Elder College Society. She has many years of varied business experience in publishing, media, marketing and promotions.

Over the past 4 years the Bowen Island Community Foundation has grown to the extent that they required a paid Administrator to take the workload off of the volunteer board. Julia’s background and work over the past few years on the board made her a natural choice to fill this position and effective September 1, 2016 she stepped down from the board to assume the role of Administrator.

She is married with 4 children and 2 grandchildren and in her spare time she can be found on the local trails with her black dogs and a camera over her shoulder.
