From 14 applications and a shortlist of six, the Bowen Island Community Foundation is pleased to announce that it has selected three local projects to receive 2014 Community Impact Grants. We anticipate announcing one further Community Impact Grant in the spring.
1. Upon Municipal approval, the Bowen Island Garden Gateway Initiative will receive $15,000 to help build a garden walkway with signage and seating between the cenotaph and the washroom block at the ferry. The project, led by Holly Graff, Wynn Nielsen, and James Tuer, will bring together an innovative and collaborative mix of donated and discounted resources to help create a visually pleasing arrival and departure point at the ferry.
2. The Bowen Youth Centre will receive $2,500 to fund: (1) new road hockey equipment; and (2) two evening programs that will provide gathering places for Island youth, running early in 2015 – Gym Time, and Cooking.
3. The Bowen Island Public Library and the Bowen Island Arts Council will receive an initial grant of $2,600 to fund a feasibility study for the proposed new building next to the existing library—the Cove Culture Corner – that would provide an important new gathering place for the whole community. If the feasibility study supports the concept, the Foundation will grant a further $12,400 to develop the Capital Campaign Strategy for the project.
Continuing our Vital Conversations Each of the three successful proposals articulated good ideas that will breathe life into three of the priorities that emerged from the Vital Conversations event in May 2014: Civic Pride, Community Gathering Places, and Environment.
The Community Impact Fund, and the donations that build it These three projects are funded by the Community Impact Fund, which sits at the heart of our Foundation. The fund is built on donations large and small from people all over our Island community. Today’s announcement represents the continuation of grants and scholarship awarded by the Foundation to Bowen Island students, organizations, and initiatives. Please consider being a part of our 2014 Giving Campaign.
